    As he lost his left eye to the first atomic bomb, he was left blind until he found a mechanic to create an artificial eye for him after the second bomb. The new eye bestows him with x-ray vision which enables him to see through matter. However, this is extremely taxing on his brain due to the sheer amount of concentration and energy needed, so he rarely uses it and hides it with an eye patch.

History:
Shin was originally an active and energetic child during his youth. He got along well with his younger brother, Yoh (陽, Yō), who addressed Shin as “Shin-nii (心兄 Shin nī) and was 1 years his junior. He and his brother looked like exact opposites; Shin had black hair and deep blue eyes while Yoh was blonde with passionate red eyes which “sparkled” according to Shin. Despite this fact, they still got along well and were extremely close buddies.

Yoh was weak-bodied and usually stayed home to recuperate, and Shin was always running around doing odd jobs for money for medicine. They made a promise, one that they would always be together, even when they were separated.
